The richest people in the world have a life of purpose...so what's your purpose?
In America we work hard to make a living. Most of the time making a living means making money to buy the house of our dreams, or plasma, HD TV’s, or boats and nice cars and trucks, or the best clothes and a big nest egg to end it all with! We can have all the money and stuff in the world and be rich, but still feel poor and unhappy. Our lives are full of depression, emptiness, anger, controversy and unnecessary drama. Why? It’s because we haven’t found our purpose for “living” (Proverbs 14:12).
The Bible teaches us that God gives us life and not only life, but life more abundant (John 10:10). It also tells us that God works all things out for the good of those that love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). At some point we all come to realize that we can’t do life alone. There will always be an empty feeling when we try. Something will always feel wrong when we go it alone (Proverbs 14:12). The reason is we aren’t fulfilling our purpose and, here it is, our purpose is to “live” for God’s pleasure (Colossians 1:14).
God created us to want to have a relationship with Him. Even the most remote tribes of people in the deepest jungles of earth want to worship something, they recognize a higher power. God put that desire in us when He created us. Just like a child will always have a desire to know their parents, we will have a desire to know God, and live for Him.
So the next big question is: How do I fulfill my purpose? The first big step is to realize that the way we are living is not working and is full of wrong, or as the Bible calls it sin. When we realize this sin in our lives and we want to live for God, then we will realize the need to get out of sin. That is how God helps us clean up, it is called conviction. Our part of this cleaning up is called repentance, which means telling God how sorry we are for our sin and never returning to it, and any time we do return to it we will experience that conviction feeling again. Once we realize this sin in our lives and we want to repent of it, then this is where Jesus comes in.
From the time man began to sin, God required a sacrifice of blood to cover that sin. In the Bible you’ll see that people sacrificed lambs, bulls, goats even birds as blood offerings to cover sin. God ended that process with the purest and most valuable blood offering when He allowed His Son Jesus to die on a cross just over 2000 years ago. The Bible says that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). He was the final blood sacrifice to cover all sin. So Jesus’ purpose was to cover the sins of the world, this brings us back to our purpose. Once we realize our need to know God and we have realized the wrong, or sin, in our lives and we need to get rid of that sin, then we know we need Jesus. Jesus died a horrible death all the while knowing He was doing it for a purpose, and that purpose was you.
God wants to know us and have a relationship with us, but the Bible says that God can’t look on sin, so if there is sin in our lives He won’t know us (Matthew 7:23). That is why Jesus went through this horrible death experience for you, so you could have the opportunity for God to know you and give your life purpose. Living a life of purpose is important or else you wouldn’t be searching for a purpose even now. Find that life full of purpose now by realizing your sin, calling out to God to save you from sin and a dead-end life, and realize that Jesus is the only way to cover sin and find this life of purpose (John 14:6).
